random questions

1. where do u find merkel cells?
2.why does the number of melanocytes vary between regions of the oral mucosa?
3.how does the periodontal ligament recive its blood supply?
4. whats is the process of keratinisation?

please help !!!!!

  1. 1...Merkel cells are found near the basement membrane of epithelial tissue..a nueral cell invoved in sensory production...
2.... I think the number of melanocytes vary between regions as they are the site of synthesis of melanin pigmentation with its transfer to adjacent cells..so im thinking different consistency of the epithelium denotes amount of pigmentation and is also associated with race of the person????

  2. 3) PDL is highly vascularised, ie it is saturated with blood vessels which provide nutrients.

  3. 4) highly doubt we need to know the process. basically keratanocytes (keratin producing cells) differentiate and aggregate together to form keratin

  4. 3) agree with u Tom..but how is it vascularised..would the PDL blood supply be via the alveolar bone thru sharpeys fibres??? this then flows through into the apical foramen of the tooth into the pulp??? i know the PDL has blood vessels but how do they get there??

  5. 4) Keratin layer.variable thickness depending on location.Cells in keratin layer (stratum corneum)are flat with no nucleus.Cytoplasm filled with Keratin. The outer cells of the keratin layer (squames) are flat and shedded as they are no longer viable and shed as a result of the high turnover rate of the tissue..they are constantly being renewed..Keratinisation occurs in non keratinised epithelium in areas of trauma (eg cheek biting..heat on palate from smoking..)it is like scar tissue..or like when you get a callous on your hands from repetitive friction..

  8. Doing well guys...
Ok if you look through the last set of PowerPoint slides from the periodontium session, you will see a diagram that outlines the blood supply. Vessels pass through the perforations of the lamina dura as well as the apical foramen to pass through the PDL both in a horizontal and vertical direction.Rachel it doesnt have anything to do with the Sharpeys fibres, but I really liked your answer to no 1!
    Keep the revising going.
    Hope this helps

  9. Revised question 3-
The periodontal ligament has a rich blood supply that originates from blood vessels in the adjacent bone marrow spaces and through the dental arteries that enter primarily through the apical foramen
